CT Soils and House Lifting in CT: What to Know

A lot of folks think House Lifting in CT is all about the house itself. The beams, the jacks, the lift, all that stuff. And sure, that part matters. But the ground under the house matters just as much, maybe more. Around Connecticut, one yard can be totally different from the next. We’ll get clay at one property, old fill at another, and sand closer to the shoreline. That changes the whole plan. At High Caliber Contracting, we’ve always told people the same thing: before we talk foundation, we need to know what the soil is doing.

Clay can be tough to deal with. It holds water. Then it dries out. Then it moves. That back-and-forth is hard on foundations over time. We’ve seen spots that looked fine at first, then after a stretch of rain, everything changed. That’s why drainage becomes a big deal on some Structural Lifting jobs in CT. If water keeps sitting around the foundation, clay can swell and start putting pressure where you don’t want it. So before we pour anything, we look hard at how water is moving across the site and where it’s going to end up.

Fill is one that catches people off guard. Somebody hears “fill” and thinks, well, dirt is dirt. Not really. Fill can be loose, uneven, or full of mixed material from who knows when. Sometimes it was put in right years ago. Sometimes it definitely was not. That’s where bringing in a geotech can make a lot of sense. On some House lifting CT projects, it’s the smartest move you can make, just to know what you’re dealing with before the real work starts. It may feel like one more step, but it can save a whole lot of money and stress later.

Sand is a different story. A lot of times it drains better, which is great, but it can also shift if the support plan isn’t right. We see that more near the coast. With House Lifting in CT, the footing choice really depends on the soil under the jobsite. Some homes need wider footings. Some need deeper ones. Some need better drainage built into the plan from day one. There isn’t one answer that works for every property in Connecticut, and honestly, that’s why these jobs need real planning instead of guesswork.

At High Caliber Contracting, we don’t like guessing, especially with foundations. We’d rather slow down, look at the site, and make the right call the first time. Good Structural Lifting CT work is not just getting the house up and back down. It’s making sure the new foundation makes sense for the land it’s sitting on. That part doesn’t always get talked about much, but it should. When the soil, drainage, and footing plan all work together, the end result is a house that’s set up to stay strong for the long run.
